Dog shampoo is necessary to keep your dog clean, keep them from smelling bad and help with maintaining skin and coat. Are there skin problems present such as flaky skin, hot spots or rash? Are there more pronounced skin problems present such as dermatitis or allergies? What type of coat does my dog have?

Puppies and dogs with eye problems could benefit from a tearless and hypo allergenic dog shampoo formula. These shampoos are very mild and made not to sting if gotten in the eyes. Some shampoos are formulated to remove tear stains from around the dog’s eyes and are very gentle.

Dogs with long coats or coats that tangle easily could benefit from shampoos that have conditioners in. Conditioning dog shampoos make long and wire hair more manageable.

Some shampoos are made to make black or red coat shine more. If your dog is white there are shampoos designed to whiten the coat by removing organic stains.

There are special dog shampoos formulated for sensitive skin or dry scaly skin. These shampoos are very mild and usually contain moisturizers. These shampoos may contain oatmeal, aloe vera or jojoba oil.

Some shampoos are medicated for skin conditions or flaky skin. Some of these shampoos contain sulfur or coal tar similar to human medicated shampoos for seborrhea or dandruff. If your dog has a recurring skin problem a stronger medicated dog shampoo can be prescribed by your veterinarian.

Flea shampoos usually contain insect repellents such as pyrethins or other organic based substances. These can be irritating to your dog’s skin.

If your dog has a confrontation with a skunk there are shampoos that will help with that little problem also.
